A Victorian rosewood, gilt brass banded and silver fitted dressing case, retailed by Mayer of Liverpool; the hinged cover with inset oval plaque with engraved monogram; the interior with satin backed mirror within the cover, above silver topped cut glass jars hallmarked for London 1865 and mother of pearl mounted implements (two lacking); above a drawer to one side and another below to the front, with inset retail plaque; 20cm high, 31cm wide.
NOTE: Joseph Mayer (1803-86) was at first apprenticed to his brother-in-law, Joseph Wordley, a jeweller but in 1844-5 Mayer set up his own jewellery and silversmith business in Liverpool. He became a passionate collector with a strong interest in antiquities and Mediaeval artefacts, regularly travelling abroad to study and buy.
He left his collection to the City of Liverpool and it is now held at the Walker Art Gallery.

Drocourt, Paris, a Corniche carriage clock the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with repeat of the last hour at will, the movement backplate stamped with the trademark of Alfred Drocourt and numbered 14358 giving a date of manufacture of 1877, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued-steel moon hands and signed for the retailer T. Martin, 225 Regent Street, with an engraved mask to the dial, the gilded brass Corniche case with typical Drocourt three-bale handle, height 15.5cm.
Note: Alfred Drocourt was one of the foremost carriage clock makers of the mid-to-late 19th century. Born at 8, Rue Saintonge, Paris in 1847 he worked with his father before succeeding him at 28 Rue Debelleyme in circa 1873.

Paris Londres (Honourable Mentions Paris and London Exhibitions) with the white enamel chapter ring having blue Roman numerals and signed Pierret a Paris, with a brass alarm setting ring to the centre operated via a cord through the base and wound via a cord to the side with the alarm mechanism set within the base, all standing on a brass inlaid ebonised oval base with glass dome, height 25.5cm.
Provenance: Notes with the clock suggest being given to Harriet West (18/2/1830-22/2/1922) in 1846 and then Sybil Harrison on the 10th September by Harriet W. Harrison, presumably Harriet West.

John Calver, Woodbridge, a chinoiserie longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and the makers name Jno. Calver, Woodbridge, with date aperture, cast-brass c-scroll corner spandrels and blued steel hands, the arch having a silvered boss engraved Tempus Fugit, the flat-top black lacquer case raised chinoiserie decoration in the Oriental style with the hood having quarter columns with giltwood capitals, height 218cm. With restorations to the dial.
Biography John Calver, born 1695, died 1751, is described as 'one of Suffolk's best makers of his period'. He married Mary Trott in October 1738, who died in 1750 having borne no children. Calver's will was proven in April 1751 in which a bequest was made that his former apprentice William Mahyew be allowed to purchase the shop and premises in Stone Street, Woodbridge (now Church Street) for £105 as long as stock was also purchased at cost. A number of clocks are known signed for Calver including a green lacquered longcase example with a rare 'Equation of Time' sheet set within the inside of the trunk door.

John Todd, Glasgow a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the twelve-inch having black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials, decorative blued-steel hands and signed John Todd, Glasgow, the mahogany case with arched moulding to the trunk door, brass capitals to the fluted columns, with the hood having a shaped door, fluted columns and pitched pediment, height 202cm.
Note: John Todd was a well-known clockmaker with his address given as No.1 Trongate, Glasgow between circa 1823 and 1857 and was admitted as a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen on the 29th August 1825 with a further address at 14, Brunswick Street. Todd went into partnership with Francis Reid Jr., and then following the latter's death in 1835 became J. & W. Todd when going into partnership with William Todd.

Skeggs, London, the Dutch-influenced walnut case inlaid with all-over marquetry decoration of floral design, the hood having turned columns and surmounted by a c-scroll pediment with pagoda, the base with flanged plinth and standing on bun feet, with a glass to the trunk door, height 232cm.
William Skeggs is recorded as working in Rotherhithe, London from before 1756 until his death in 1771.

Thomas Blundell, Limerick, a walnut longcase clock having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the fourteen-inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals, decorative blued-steel hands and signed This. Blundell, Limerick, with the case having an glazed oval panel to the trunk, an inset panel to the base, the hood with a round top, all with decorative carved wooden mouldings including a knights arm holding aloft a clubbed flail, being a depiction of the top of a family coat of arms, the base standing on carved lions-paw feet, height 220cms.
Notes: Thomas Blundell (born 1810 - died 1865) was a renowned Limerick clockmaker. A large turret clock signed by him was situated in the tower at Leamy's School, installed circa 1845, but was recently removed.

Note: Maurice Smith is recorded as working at the Royal Exchange, London having been apprenticed in 1694 and gaining his Freedom of the Clockmakers Company in 1702. He had a sale of his stock in 1732. A watch movement signed by him is exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington, London.
