A gorge cased French carriage clock with the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong, with a button to the top allowing for a repeat of the last hour at will, stamped to the rear of the backplate with a B within a circle, most likely Baveux of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued-steel moon hands, with an engine-turned mask, the brass Gorge case with typical five-bale handle, height 16/13cm, handle up/down.
With leather carrying box stamped within for the retailer Hall & Co, Manchester.
By descent to the present owner.
Given to Ethel Jane Gill by her aunt Jane Gill, born 1812, on her death aged 82 in 1892. After the death of Ethel Gill on May the 23rd 1894 it was given to her sister Sophie Geraldine Moser (nee Gill) and following her death in March 1963 stayed with the Moser family until the present day.

Richard et Cie, Paris a late-Victorian Corniche carriage clock the eight-day duration timepiece movement having a later platform lever escapement and stamped to the backplate with the serpent trademark of the maker Richard et Cie, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued-steel spade hands, the Corniche case with a three-bale handle, height 13cm/11.5cm, handle up/down.
Note: Richard et Cie were situated at Rue Bondy, 32, Paris. Founded in 1848 as Lemaitre & Bergmann, by 1867 they had become Richard and Co with a branch in London and received an Honourable Mention at the 1889 Paris Exposition. They were excellent makers of pendules de voyage with various trademarks including the initials R&C either side of a serpent.

Couaillet frères, Paris, a late-Victorian Serpentine carriage clock the eight-day duration timepiece movement having a platform lever escapement, with the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued-steel spade hands and a gilt-brass mask, the Serpentine case with a shaped handle, height 15.5cm/13cm, handle up/down.
Note: In 1885 Armand Couaillet was employed by the prominent maker Albert Villon in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, leaving in 1892 to set up his own workshops alongside his brothers Denis and Ernest, becoming Couaillet frères. Couaillet suffered a large fire that all but destroyed their premises and it was the Couaillet fire of 1912 that prompted them to take-over the Delépine-Barrois concern situated across the road when Ludovic and Marie Delépine returned to Paris. Couaillet went on to rebuild the lost workshops and continued to use these workshops alongside their new acquisition.

Drocourt, Paris an Anglaise carriage clock having an eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with a button to repeat the last hour at will, the backplate stamped with the hand-setting arrow as used by Alfred Drocourt and typical Drocourt Slow/Fast regulation, along with the serial number 22499 giving a date of manufacture of circa 1886, the white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals and blued-steel fleur-de-lys hands, the brass Anglaise case with beaded mouldings and fluted Greek-key handle, height 18cm/16cm handle up/down. Complete with leather travelling box and numbered key.
Notes: Alfred Drocourt was considered one of the finest of the French carriage clock makers in the mid-to-late 19th century.
Pierre Drocourt, born 1819 & his son Alfred, born 1847, were one of the top makers of carriage clocks in the mid to late Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time, as well as premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28; previously named Rue de Limoges prior to 1867, where he joined the well-known maker Blanpain. They made superb carriage clocks which were often decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. Alfred succeeded his father Pierre in circa 1871, with the latter's retirement when he returned to his home village with his wife Marie and daughter Melanie.

From serial number 19677, made circa 1884, until number 29398 made circa 1896, Drocourt produced a series of carriage clocks and movements that were without his usual trademark but which are all safely attributed as coming from the Drocourt workshops in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont under the supervision of the manager Auguste Lechevallier. A third of clocks from this period recorded are without the trademark but are identical to those signed, both in style and markings.

Note: The prominent maker and one-time mayor of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, Albert Villon set-up his carriage clock making factory in 1867 and by 1889 professed to be making some 20,000 carriage clocks per year. In 1887 Paul Duverdrey joined Villon as a director who in turn was joined by Joseph Bloquel after the death of Villon in 1910 to become Duverdry & Bloquel. The firm later became the carriage and alarm clock making concern Bayard.

Vincenti et Cie, Paris, a boulle-work mantel clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, and numbered 19785, with a cast sunburst bob to the pendulum, the round cast-brass dial having applied enamel plaques with black Roman numerals and blued-steel fleur-de-lys hands, the shaped tortoiseshell case having engraved brass inlaid c-scroll decoration, gilded cast-brass rococo mounts and feet, shaped glazed side panels and surmounted by a cast urn, height 55cm.
Note: Vincenti started his workshops before 1823 in Montbeliard, France making the blancs roulants (rough movements) for clockmakers to finish and use, but went bankrupt a year later, whereupon the clock manufacturer Roux took on the management. Although Vincenti died in 1834, the business continued, winning a number of awards including the Medaille d'Argent (silver medal) in 1855.

Edward Bilbie, Chewstoke, an oak longcase clock now having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the eleven-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter engraved with black Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half-hour markings, with cast-brass female-head spandrels to the four corners, blued-steel hands, decorative engraving to the date aperture and with an applied silvered plaque to the matted centre engraved with the makers name Edw. Bilbie, Chewstoke, the case with a panelled base and trunk door, the hood having full pillars with gilt-wood capitals and a scroll pediment, height 210cm.
Note: There were four makers in Chewstoke named Edward Bilbie with the maker of this movement being the third in the family so named having been born in circa 1715 and recorded working independently from circa 1745 until circa 1768 having been possibly brought up and taught by his uncle Thomas, following both his father and grandfather as a clockmaker and bell-founder. For further biographical details of Edward Bilbie and his family see Bilbie and The Chew Valley Clockmakers, by James Moore, Roy Rice and Ernest Hucker, pub. the authors 1995, where many longcase clocks are discussed and compared along with a detailed family history.

Buxton, Diss, with cast-brass c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and arch, the case having a break-arch trunk door with the hood having three-quarter columns with gilt-wood capitals, a swan-neck pediment with gilt-wood ball finials and a diamond frieze, height 212cm.
Note: Samuel Buxton, born 1735, was apprenticed to James Smyth of Saxmundham, Suffolk in 1754 for a fee of £5. He is then recorded working in Diss, Norfolk having advertised in the Ipswich Journal a lost watch in 1766 and with an indenture signed for a lease on a property in August 1777. His wife Harriet died in 1778, aged 33, followed by Samuel himself in March 1780, aged 45.

Hebert in Morefields, London , the matted centre having a subsidiary seconds dial, engraved decoration to the date aperture and ringed winding holes, with cast-brass cherub-and-crown corner spandrels and engraved wheat-ear border decoration, the associated carved flat-top oak case having pillars to the hood, height 204cm.
Note: Anthoine Hebert is first recorded as working in Moorfields circa 1670, then Porter Street circa 1690 and finally Horse Shoe Alley, Shoreditch from circa 1701.

Nicholas Provost, London, a late-17th/early-18th century walnut longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the twelve-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half-hour markings, engraved at VI o'clock with the maker's name Nicos. Prevost, London, the matted dial centre having a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and ringed winding holes, with cast-brass cherub-and-crown corner spandrels and engraved edge decoration, with decorative blued-steel hands, the flat-top walnut case with three-quarter pillars to the hood, with brass bound weights, height 222cm.
Note: Nicholas Prevost was a well-known clockmaker recorded working circa 1710.

An English oak Admiral Fitzroy barometer with a Jerome & Co. clock set to the top having an eight-day duration movement with the round white dial having black Roman numerals, blued-steel spade hands and signed Jerome & Co., Pat. Apl. 12th 1881, for the New Haven Clock Co. of America, the barometer plates having the usual Fitzroy application with an atmospheric tube set within and thermometer marked Registered N0. 8885, the oak case with canted corners, pediment top and flat base, height 118cm.
Note: Chauncey Jerome, born 1793 was known to be an innovator in the American clockmaking business, establishing his factory at St. John Street, New Haven, Connecticut, USA in 1816. He went bankrupt in 1855 after which the New Haven Clock Company took on the business and continued to use the name until circa 1904. T. & H. Doublet, Moorgate Street, London, a substantial mahogany stick barometer the aslant dials having a double vernier gauge showing 10 A.M Yesterday and 10 A.M. Today and signed T. & H. Doublet, Opticians, Moorgate St., Bank of England, Manufactory, 7 City Road, London, the mahogany case with an inset thermometer to the trunk, scroll mouldings to the neck, and an ebonised urn shaped cistern cover, height 104cm.
Note: T. & H. Doublet are recorded as working as optical, mathematical and philosophical makers at City Road, Finsbury from 1853 until 1868 as well as 7 Moorgate Street, London from 1861 until 1868 and 6 Moorgate Street from 1869 until 1878 followed by 11 Moorgate Street from 1879 until circa 1904, although these premises may have been the same, just renumbered due to redevelopment.

Note: John Forrest is recorded as a chronometer maker of 12 Hanover Square, London, circa 1850 and later 29 Myddelton Street, circa 1857 until after 1862. It is suggested that Forrest did not make chronometers and in 1891 became well-known when he went to trial at the High Court over the use of the wording Maker to the Admiralty. He died in 1871 when his siter sold his stock-in-trade to Carley & Co as mentioned in the British Horological Journal of March 1894.
