Drocourt, Paris an engraved Cannalee carriage clock the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with a push repeat sounding the last hour at will, the backplate stamped with the DC trademark for Drocourt along with the serial number 16045 giving a date of manufacture as circa 1878, the movement stamped within the plates with the movement serial number 1930, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued-steel moon hands, a subsidiary alarm setting dial and gilt-brass engraved mask, the brass Cannalee case engraved with c-scroll decoration and having a matching three-bale handle, height 16cm/13cm, handle up/down. With tooled leather travelling box. Notes: Alfred Drocourt was considered one of the finest of the French carriage clock makers in the mid-to-late 19th century.Pierre Drocourt, born 1819 & his son Alfred, born 1847, were one of the top makers of carriage clocks in the mid to late Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time, as well as premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28; previously named Rue de Limoges prior to 1867, where he joined the well-known maker Blanpain. They made superb carriage clocks which were often decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. Ballion a Paris, a relatively early French quarter-hour-repeating pillared mantel clock the eight-day duration movement having a silk-suspension and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with pull-cord repeating the last hour and unusually with the strikework set on the movement backplate and numbered 2897, with a gilded cast-brass sunburst pendulum bob, the white convex enamel dial having black Roman numerals, gilded brass fleur-de-lys- hands, and signed for the maker Baillon a Paris, the white marble case having cast brass gilded capitals to the four pillars and surmounted by a gilded brass canopy, height 38cm including bracket.Notes: The Baillon family are a well recorded family of fine clockmakers originating in Rouen in the late-1600s with Jean-Batiste and Albert. By the early-to-mid 1700s the family had moved to Paris with the Jean-Baptiste-Albert situated at rue Dauphine, a superb watchmaker with various horological items in private collections and museums including the Musee du Petit Palais and the Musee des Arts Decorative a Paris all signed Baillon a Paris. Leyman, Heavitree, with the single-fusee eight-day duration movement having an anchor escapement, with a round mahogany case, diameter 39cm.Notes: The watchmaker and jeweller Frank Leyman is recorded as working at 6, High Street Heavitree (now 44), on the outskirts of Exeter. He was originally apprenticed to John Parrish until setting up on his own account by 1887. by 1987 it was the oldest established business in Heavitree. Note: William Sellers was a fine maker recorded as being apprenticed in 1682 and a freeman of the Clockmakers Company from 1691 until 1740. A watch signed for Sellers was in the famed Dennison Collection.
