Charles Frodsham an 18K gold full-hunter pocket watch the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued-steel spade hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and signed Chas. Frodsham, 09799, AD Fmsz, the three-quarter plate movement engraved Chas. Frodsham, 27, South Molton St, London, By Appointment to the King, No. 09799, AD. Fmsz along with the two crowned marks showing By Appointment to the King and Gold Medals of Honour, French, Russian, Italian, the engraved balance cock to the lever escapement stamped with the fleur-de-lys mark of the Rotherham Watch Company, suppliers of movements to Frodsham, the full hunter case hallmarked for 18K gold, London 1918, repeated to the inner cuvee, along with the initials to the bow CH for Charles Harris, watch case maker working in Norfolk Street, Coventry, diameter 54mm, gross weight 121.4gs. The Fmsz mark shown on both the dial and backplate is first recorded on serial number 6949 being on a watch signed Arnold, Charles Frodsham, and is a date using a system of each letter corresponding to a number F(1) R(2) O(3) etc. with the z being 0 giving a date of 1850 and probably indicating the year when Frodsham first made 'high quality' watches. Notes: Founded in 1834, Charles Frodsham is considered the oldest continuously trading chronometer maker in the world. Charles, born on the 15th April, 1810, was the third son of William James Frodsham. He was educated at Christ's Hospital where one of the conditions of entry was that at age 14 the children were expected to be apprenticed to a Master. As such Charles was apprenticed to his father, William James, on the 14th July, 1824 for seven years. It was whilst an apprentice that he first submitted marine chronometers, numbered 1 & 2, for the Premium Trial at Greenwich whereupon he received the second Premium prize of £170 for No. 2 in 1831. In 1833, aged only 23, Charles was made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Charles Frodsham went on to have a distinguished career having set up on his own account in 1834 following his marriage to Elizabeth Mill in April of that year. He took on the business of the eminent chronometer maker John Roger Arnold in 1843, following Arnold's death, becoming Arnold & Frodsham with the address given as 84, Strand, London, reverting to Charles Frodsham in 1858. Frodsham was at the forefront of chronometer making at this time and applied himself to making improvements and upgrades including the search for a cure for Middle Temperature Error as set out in correspondence between Frodsham and the Astronomer Royal G.B. Airy which commenced in 1843 and only ended upon the death of Charles Frodsham in 1871. His son Harrison Mill Frodsham took charge of the business and indeed continued correspondence with Airy when in a letter dated 25th February, 1871 he was asking permission to send to the Royal Observatory an astronomical regulator fitted with a gravity escapement followed by, in August, a further letter asking to have viewed a Galvanic Chronometer which we have just made for the Allegeny Observatory, U.S. In 1884 the firm's name changed to Charles Frodsham & Co, becoming a limited company in 1893. Following the demolition of 84 Strand the business moved to 115 New Bond Street with workshops at 11 Duke Street. The move to 27 South Molton Street occurred in December 1914. The Rotherham watchmaking concern had its origins in 1747 with the founder clockmaker William Vale of Coventry and by 1754 had become Vale, Howlett & Carr. It was in 1790 that the Rotherham name enters the scene when Richard Kevitt Rotherham, an apprentice at the firm, becomes a partner in Vale & Rotherham, which is again renamed in 1842, Richard Kevitt Rotherham & Sons. In 1867 the firm, known since 1850 as Rotherham & Sons, held a successful trial using John Wycherley's system of manufacture and many movements of this period bear the JW stamp on the frontplate. It was in 1876 that Mr Gooding joined the firm becoming a prominent member of the workforce working alongside John Rotherham. It was Gooding who in circa 1880, and now the firm's manager, was sent to America by John Rotherham to arrange the purchase of machinery from the American Watch Tool Co, being similar to that used by Waltham. It is suggested by some that it was Rotherham's in 1880 who made the first truly English machine-made watch, but the history of both the EWC and Ehrhardt, among others, would refute this.
